MARCH 21-World Down Syndrome Day

Down Syndrome is a genetic disorder  caused when abnormal cell division results in extra genetic material from chromosome 21.Down Syndrome various in severity among individuals causing lifelong intellectual disability and developmental delays. It is the most common genetic chromosomal disorder and cause of learning disabilities in children. It also commonly cause other medical abnormalities including heart and gastrointestinal  disorder. Early intervention programs with a team of therapist and special educators who can treat each child’s specific situation are helpful in managing Down Syndrome. Children can improve their lifestyle through Speech therapy, Support group, Occupational therapy ,Physical therapy etc.

In December 2011, the General Assembly declared 21 March as World Down Syndrome Day .The General Assembly decided ,with effect from 2012, to observe World Down Syndrome Day on 21 March each year.
